Being a woman is an impediment, but she doesn’t let that get her down. When she transfers to Columbia Law School (because Marty starts a job in New York City) and graduates at the top of her class, discrimination against women is rampant: No law firm in the city will hire her. Sleeping two hours a night to get it all done becomes something of a habit for RBG-one that continues in her future life on the high courts (although she apparently makes up for it by sleeping in on weekends).īader Ginsburg is a stellar law student, making the prestigious Harvard Law Review in her first year.

Then her husband, as a third-year law student, gets cancer. She has a babysitter until 4:00 p.m., and playing with her daughter until bedtime gives her a respite from the stresses of law school. That does not stop her from working her chops off. As one of only nine women among 500 men at Harvard, she is constantly on display. When RBG starts law school as the young mother of a 14-month-old baby, her dynamo qualities really come out. Why not let her star power rub off on us? For those of us dedicated to gender equality at work and at home, here are five RBG qualities worth emulating. This diminutive (she’s 5’1”) warrior rose to the top of the legal profession despite enormous odds, and we can learn a lot from the way she has lived her life and devoted herself to a career that has literally changed the path for women in the United States. ( My own 10-year-old daughter wears a sweatshirt that says "The Supremes" with the faces of all the historical and current women Supreme Court justices on it.) Bader Ginsburg has earned the nickname “Notorious RBG” for her relentless pursuit of social justice and for her fiery dissenting opinions on a court that can tilt toward conservative decisions. Yet her well-known face appears on coffee mugs and T-shirts, and every liberal-progressive wants to take a selfie with her.
At 85-years-old, Bader Ginsburg is an unlikely cultural icon: She’s highly intellectual and incredibly hardworking, soft-spoken and subversively powerful.
